Description

Woven House was intended to be just that. A series of spaces woven into the landscape. Client’s main requirement was for all spaces to have an experience of the garden. The design revolves around an attempt to create living spaces intermingled with garden spaces. Six different gardens are present within the plot. Five at ground level and one at roof top. The living spaces open out to these gardens from varying orientations giving surprise and delight to the residents walking through.

Located in a suburb of Colombo, the land is relatively large in urban Sri Lankan standards (1750 sq.m.) and the brief demanded the most to be made out of it.

The main “texture” and “material” of the design remains the landscape. Plant troughs, gardens, plant beds, turfed areas, red gravel strips and large wines falling down at the front provides the highlights in the material palette at every angle.
Art has also been used to create focal points in the garden and within the house. A large wall mounted steel mural is the focus of the main garden. The arrival lobby has a long acrylic painting of a lotus pond welcoming guests in to the residence.
